TRIAL OF A TIME LORD: It's always difficult to evaluate Patrick Troughton's stories given that the vast majority of his episodes were left near a magnet overnight in the early 1970s, but we confess to a real fondness for the 'Monster Years'. There's some terrific stories here, and the archaic nature of the monochrome picture and weirdly antiquated 'futuristic' designs serve to make them seem even more chilling than they did back in the '60s. That said, the viewing public of the time weren't quite as convinced, and grumblings about how Troughton wasn't half as good as that old man with the hat in astrakhan fur led to the first of many cancellation crises, only narrowly averted by the arrival of Jon Pertwee and the Old Silurian.
